The House of Representatives approved an amendment Friday evening that would cut all federal funding to Planned Parenthood.

If passed by the Senate, the amendment, introduced by Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), will cut the $317 million Title X budget, which funds such aspects as sex education and STD screening.

The Huffington Post reports Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) revealed she had an abortion before the vote took place.

“…Planned Parenthood has a right to operate. Planned Parenthood has a right to provide services for family planning. Planned Parenthood has a right to offer abortions. Last time I checked, abortions were legal in this country,” she said.

But Politico quotes House Majority Leader Eric Cantor as saying, “The time has come to respect the wishes of the majority of Americans who adamantly oppose using taxpayer dollars for abortions.”

According to CBS News, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards issued a statement saying, “In attacking Planned Parenthood, the House Republican leadership has launched an outrageous assault on the millions of Americans who rely on Planned Parenthood for primary and preventive health care, including lifesaving breast and cervical cancer screenings, annual exams, family planning visits, birth control, HIV testing, and more.”

Michelle Trupiano, spokesperson and lobbyist for the Planned Parenthood in Columbia, says the organization serves more than 80,000 patients among the 15 clinics in Missouri.

Legislators and allies of Planned Parenthood will be holding a press conference about the amendment at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Missouri State Capitol.
