Breathy singer-songwriter Natalie Walker is probably best known for her cover of the Counting Crows’ “Colorblind,” released on her 2006 debut album Urban Angel. This former Daughter Darling vocalist and Indiana native has since released two LPs — 2008’s With You and Spark, which was released today — that have made only minor waves.
On Spark, Walker continues to hone her vocal skills, but reaffirms that her songwriting is often lacking. On “Found You,” Walker predictably sings, “Kind of feels like starlight, it’s like I’m breathing for the first time, we’re all right, we’re all right, ’cause I found you.” Sometimes her simple songwriting works to her advantage, but often it feels forced.
The eight-track LP includes some highlights such as the opening track, “Uptight,” and “Mars,” which appropriately includes electronic beats. The album’s first single, “Cool Kids,” is the most upbeat track on the album, and stands out among the album’s calm, laid-back sound. The single’s danceable RAC remix has generated some buzz, much like the Thievery Corporation’s remix of Urban Angel’s “Quicksand,” which was on Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette.
Ultimately, Spark reaffirms Walker’s indecisiveness. Does she want to be an obscure singer-songwriter or a vocalist backed by danceable, electronic beats? Her consistent release of remixed singles suggests the latter. As long as she continues to straddle two different genres, Walker will probably remain under the radar.

Remember the days when albums were a journey, when they could contain songs that didn’t all sound the same? We wonder why the Beatles can’t exist today, it’s because of the close-minded numbness of reviewers like you who need something familiar in order to back it. This album is beautiful and will be loved by anyone who isn’t afraid to break away from the sheep.
Rebecca, thanks for reading our blog and taking the time to comment. Are there any musicians you think Vox should be aware of?
