Twilight fan? Turn back now. Stake Land‘s undead don’t glitter; they kill.
In what’s being called one of the best horror films of the year, Stake Land comes across as a mixture between the sparse, cinematographically gorgeous Winter’s Bone and one of George Romero’s bloody zombie tales. These undead aren’t zombies per se, but they are monstrous vampires with zombie tendencies. You know, the rotting flesh, the eating of people, that sort of thing.
The film follows Martin (Gossip Girl‘s Connor Paolo), a typical teenage boy, after the country collapsed due to economic and political disasters. We meet Martin in the bleak apocalyptic wasteland where a vampire epidemic has ravished what’s left of the world. Enter mercenary Mister, a vicious vampire hunter, to get our young hero to safety in Canada.
It’s super low-budget, but it’s high on horror. This atmospheric apocalyptic vision will play at Ragtag through Monday.
