A horcrux is an object in which a dark witch or wizard has placed part of their soul in an effort to gain immortality. One must destroy all the horcruxes a witch or wizard has created before the witch or wizard can be killed. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry, Ron and Hermione seek to destroy the seven horcruxes of the Lord Voldemort.

Tom Riddle’s Diary

Written by Voldemort when he was known as his given name, Tom Riddle, while he was a student at Hogwarts. The diary is discovered by Ginny Weasley in the second Harry Potter novel, and she is soon possessed by its power. In the climax of the book, Harry destroys the diary by stabbing it with a basilisk fang.
