Tweet, tweet. Columbians were all a Twitter the last seven days about the biggest local stories, including a ranking, a spelling bee and a shooting.

Hundreds of MU basketball faithful filled Mizzou Arena Sunday night for a Selection Sunday NCAA tournament watch party. Many hoped that Mizzou would receive a No. 1 ranking due to its decisive Big 12 championship win over a formidable Baylor, but the team was declared a No. 2 seed, placing them in the top 8 of 64 competing teams. Big 12 rival KU also received a No. 2 seed, and when a poll on VoxMagazine.com asked readers to react to the ranking, almost 50% of responders blamed Kansas for the selection (and everything else).

DeAudre Orlanda Johnson, 17, was shot late Monday evening in Douglass Park. He died early Tuesday morning from wounds obtained in the incident. Columbia Police spokeswoman Latisha Stroer said in an interview with the Missourian that Johnson was not the intended target. This is the second fatal shooting in two weeks, and continues the unfortunate trend of unrelated shootings across Columbia, including incidents outside Chuck E. Cheese’s and Boone Tavern in February. Columbia Police have implemented “proactive patrols” to combat the string of violence.

The Columbia Daily Tribune Regional Spelling Bee on Tuesday held at Christian Fellowship School showcased the talents of local word wizards. Students grades three through eight from seven counties had to prove their spelling prowess by winning their local spelling bees before they were able to compete. Winner Priscilla Liow, a home-schooled 14-year-old, beat out 52 other students and won by correctly spelling neptunium. She will compete May 27 – June 1 in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC and won an all-expenses paid trip for two to attend, and hopefully win. Fingers c-r-o-s-s-e-d.
