Now that Opening Day has come to a close, I would say that baseball season is in full swing — no pun intended. And what better team to start the season with than the Chicago Cubs? Although the Cardinals lost game one against the Cubs, they stepped up their game and won the series.
Sometimes focusing on anything but the game is hard, so here are a few things that you might have missed.
During game one and two, the Cardinals sported gold embossed caps and jerseys. They were worn for the World Series commemorating ceremony in honor of last season’s championship. If I may say so myself, they were beautiful.
Since we are on the topic of World Series rings, did you all see what made the cut for the 14-karat white gold rings? I’ll give you a hint. It stole the heart of St. Louis fans, is fuzzy and practically runs Mizzou’s campus. If you guessed a squirrel, then you are right. The “rally squirrel” is on the ring running across home plate.
Although the “rally squirrel” hasn’t been running across any bases here lately, a new face in the Cardinals lineup has been picking up the slack. Matt Carpenter, who is currently playing first base in place of Lance Berkman, hit five RBI’s today. He is one of two Cardinals rookies to have four hits and five RBIs in the same game since 1960. Way to go Carp!
Speaking of first base… This one you may or may not have missed. This year’s season opener was the first time in 11 years that Albert Pujols didn’t stand at first base. Although it seemed like we could have used him during game one of this series, Pujols was not on Cardinals fans radar today. This includes me, someone who burst into tears after hearing the news of his departure on December 9. After Saturday nights win though, I officially took my Pujols keychain off my keys and threw it in the trash.
