A local trial, an unexpected (and maybe unearned) ranking and a concert were all the tweet on Twitter last week with Columbia users.
On Sunday, Parade magazine announced its ranking of the 25 hardest working cities in the US. And, shock of all shocks (at least to me), Columbia, Missouri was placed at the top of that list. The rankings were based on unemployment rates, likelihood of workers to work on weekends, percentage of households with dual-incomes and the city’s industries. Columbia’s ranking was attributed to the city’s “seven colleges,” six hospitals and Columbia’s low unemployment rate of 6 percent, according to the magazine.
Later that day, county music sensation and superstar Miranda Lambert performed at Mizzou Arena. The arena was packed with fans that sang, swayed and tweeted along with Miranda throughout the concert. Columbia fans tweeted at the star @Miranda_Lambert before, during and after the show, one even asking for a shoutout from Miranda to Columbia. The star performed the night before in Wichita, and the next day flew to LA to join her husband Blake Shelton, coach on the hit television series The Voice during the live elimination rounds. We still love you, Miranda, #miz hashtag or not.
The Ryan Ferguson case has caused quite a stir with Columbia residents on Twitter. The man is accused of murdering former Columbia Daily Tribune sports editor Kent Heitholt in 2001, and was arrested and charged in 2004. Since then, the man has been tried, convicted of burglary and has sent entered into a long appeal process because of a sworn, taped statement by his partner Chuck Erickson in the burglary that night saying that Ferguson was just a bystander and did not commit the crime. A new evidentiary hearing for the man began on Monday. Currently, Ferguson is serving his sentence of 40 years in prison for second-degree murder and first-degree robbery.
