Weezy might be a “young money millionaire tougher than Nigerian hair.” He might have lots of swaggyswagswag. But as news outlets including the International Business Times and MTV have reported this morning, he is taking an indefinite break from music to pursue skateboarding.
While nobody expects Lil Wayne to become the next Tony Hawk, it seems like a majority of people are relieved that he’s hanging up the mic. “THANK THE LORD, YOU HEARD MY PRAYER,” writes one commenter. ” Another writes, “Good, he’s probably one of the worst mainstream acts at the moment.” They might want to delay the celebration, however. Similar to Jay-Z’s “retirement,” Wayne could just be waiting to milk publicity and make “A Milli” on a comeback tour.
This comes on the heels of rapper Snoop Dogg’s name change to “Snoop Lion,” a Rastafarian move that has puzzled countless fans and meme creators on the Internet.
While the two events are unrelated, it shows that the rap industry is constantly evolving as artists continue to reinvent their identities.
