Team USA looked strong in its win over Lithuania this morning, even though the winning margin was too close for comfort.
At halftime, the U.S., lead by starters Tyson Chandler, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul, maintained a 55-51 lead. When the second half started, the game remained close, as neither team was able to pull away. During the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, the Lithuanian captain and former tiger, Linas Kleiza, tried to make things interesting by draining a few baskets. Chris Paul made that hard to do with a last second steal to quell any comeback that Lithuania was able to muster. The game ended with a Team USA 99-94 victory.
America holds a commanding lead in Pool A with eight points. If Lithuania wants to advance to the bracket stage, they will need to beat Tunisia on Monday. Kleiza and his squad shouldn’t have a problem with that, especially since they played so well against the U.S.
Team USA looks to close out pool play against Argentina on Monday. It’s opponent will be looking to save its Olympic life as a loss could mean going home empty-handed.
