Parks & Recreation Season Four

Out this week: Parks & Recreation season four on DVD. If you’re not already a dedicated fan, I assume you are skeptical of a show about small-town government. But Parks & Rec is consistently full of situational irony, running jokes, awkward situations and stellar cast with excellent deadpan expressions. It’s a documentary with an understated comedy reminiscent of The Office.

The show follows overzealous government official Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and her Parks & Recreation Department peers in the small town of Pawnee, Indiana. The all-star cast also includes Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Rob Lowe and more.

Season four follows Leslie Knope as she campaigns for City Council (and makes a mess of it). While this sounds like a mundane plot for a show next to the vampires and pageant toddlers we’re used to watching, Parks & Recreation ultimately wins for its lovable characters and mastery of parody.

If you’ve never seen the show, now’s a good time to start. If you were waiting for the fourth season to come out on DVD, well … congratulations. Go get it, and hopefully it will make you as happy as my favorite character, Ron Swanson.
