Welcome to This Week in Geek, a new recurring section of VoxTalk where we’ll break down all the major news from the last week about video games, card game, comic books, TV shows, and about anything else you can be a geek about. Let’s not waste time though, here’s what went down this week:

Around CoMo: Valhalla’s Gate and Magelings both celebrated the birthday of popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering today by hosting casual competitions and giving away free 15-card booster packs to participants. Missed out? Be sure to preregister for the prerelease event for the upcoming Return to Ravnica expansion at one of the stores.

Began: The latest season of Doctor Who, which kicked off with “Asylum of the Daleks” last Saturday. Be sure to catch the next episode tonight at 8 p.m. on BBC America!

Happy Birthday:  Star Trek, which turned 46 on September 8th, and was celebrated by Google with an interactive doodle on their home search page.

Kicking the Bucket: Popular TV channel G4TV, originally conceived of as a video-game-only channel, after several years of declining ratings following the loss of two of its major hosts. The station will be re-made in 2013 to with a new, more generic focus on a “modern male” audience.
