VoxTalk highlights three albums from a strong week of releases, recent tour developments and other music news.

New albums (released Oct. 30):

Cee Lo Green – Cee Lo’s Magic Moment

Once upon a time, Cee Lo was a legitimate artist—the soulful gospel singer for southern hip-hop collective Goodie Mob. Now he presses a button and judges glorified karaoke singers on The Voice. But fortunetly selling out doesn’t affect your vocal cords, and Cee Lo still has pipes of gold. Cee Lo’s Magic Moment is his first album since joining the NBC talent show. The cover art is that thing below.

The Coup – Sorry to Bother You

Marxist emcee Boots Riley is 100% transparent with his political views, but at least he makes them fun to listen to. On Sorry to Bother You, Riley teams with full ensemble of musicians and trades produced hip-hop beats for live instrumentation. Check out the upbeat chant “The Magic Clap,” and be sure to check out The Coup when they play The Blue Note on Nov. 29.

Vox pick of the week:

Kendrick Lamar – good kid m.A.A.d city

The finest hip-hop record in years. Lamar calls it a “short film”: a 12-song narrative about his life growing up in Compton, brushing with crime, drug use and the attached peer-pressure. Check out Vox’s more substantial analysis.
