This Terrible Struggle For Life
Columbia author and Civil War historian Dennis Belcher will talk about his edited collection of letters "This Terrible Struggle for Life: The Civil War Letters of a Union Regimental Surgeon" that capture the prospective of surgeon Thomas S. Hawley during the Civil War in the west. The letters describe the surgeon's duties on various campaigns, interactions with captured Confederate soldiers and freed slaves, and accounts of other daily events. Copes will be available for purchase and signing.
