I’m afraid of smelling bad. So much so, in fact, that I tend to go overboard on my perfume application. The upside of going through a bottle of body spray every month is that my scent has seared a memory of me into my friends’ brains. Case in point: An ex-boyfriend and a good friend were walking through a mall a couple of years ago. Whenever they passed one particular shopper, they kept thinking of me but couldn’t figure out why. After the fourth time seeing her, they stopped the woman as she paid for her purchases and asked what perfume she was wearing. Sure enough, it was what I wore, and the mystery was solved. They had a chuckle, then immediately called me.

So my scent doesn’t offend, but, unfortunately, as our writer learned this week, many of the musicians who have decided to venture into the fragrance business took the words “toilet water” to heart. Sometimes I consider switching to a new scent, but after reading “Fans ask: What’s that smell?” I think I’ll stick to my tried-and-true Love Spell and avoid starting brawls in the elevator.

Our conflict series continues this week. In addition to our feature covering the controversy surrounding future naming decisions for the renovated Brady Commons building and our profiles of resolute heroes who conquer conflict every day, we have some special department pieces dedicated to disputes.
Our Short Talk writer explores the delicacy of confronting rude strangers without a clue. Should you be polite or take the low road? Read “Strangers behaving badly,” and decide for yourself. In our Books story, Sam Harris sounds off against a Christian nation and tells it where it can go. I suggest pairing this article with a trip to Ragtag to see Jesus Camp. If you want to start a commotion, wear your “What would W do?” T-shirt.
