If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Hollywood’s most fashionable celebs are undoubtedly flattered all the time. But with stylists, makeup artists, personal shoppers and assistants, celebrities can’t help but look good. Their style, however, is much more accessible than they are themselves.
Monica McMurry, dean of the School of Design and Fashion at Stephens College, recommends looking at magazines such as InStyle and Lucky. Students in the fashion and design program at Stephens College suggest investing in basic items such as a black turtleneck, a good pair of boots and a wide, hip-slung belt. Design student Laura Clothier recommends accessories that will keep any look up-to-date. “Buy cheap,” she says. “Trends tend to go out of style quickly, so don’t waste your money.”
Sienna Miller, (with former beau, Jude Law), has consistenly been touted as a Tinseltown fashion ...
By incorporating items bought at Target, Wal-Mart, J.C. Penny and Claire’s with clothing already in our models’ closets, Screen editor Sheniqua Faulkner created season-appropriate looks inspired by two of today’s most stylish young actors: Sienna Miller and Adrien Brody. You might not have these stars’ massive incomes, but with a little creativity and a few key clothing items, you too can look paparazzi perfect.
The 23-year-old model-turned-actress got her Hollywood break when she landed the role of one of Jude Law’s numerous female conquests in 2004’s critically panned Alfie. After the drama from her failed relationship with Law died down, Miller’s newly risen star dazzled brighter than ever. As challenging new roles came her way (see her as Edie Sedgwick in Factory Girl, set to release in December), fashion critics and trend-watchers couldn’t help but notice Miller’s effortless sense of style.
Her bohemian chic look is dynamic. She often pairs rugged elements such as cowboy boots, leather bomber jackets or belts and handbags peppered with grommets and zippers with softer pieces such as flowing dresses, tunics or prairie skirts in luxe fabrics such as velvet, cashmere and linen. She has been photographed at red carpet events wearing designer couture, but in her downtime, Miller’s look is pulled together yet casual. “Clothes don’t have to be expensive,” Miller said in Italian magazine Donna. “But always look out for quality. Invest in one really good basic rather than wasting money on five shabby tops.”
Miller is credited with fueling trends such as wearing dresses and tunics over skinny jeans, pairing tights or leggings under miniskirts, piling on heaps of bangles and ethnic jewelry, sporting cowboy and Ugg-style boots, and wearing headbands, hats and scarves. Her everyday style is a delightful dichotomy that couples femme silhouettes and textiles with edgy details.
Adrien Brody hovered on the brink of stardom with solid performances in Summer of Sam and The Thin Red Line. But it wasn’t until he appeared as the lead in Roman Polanski’s The Pianist that Brody became a household name. His success in the film nabbed him the Oscar for Best Actor, making him the youngest winner ever at 29.
Brody’s crisp, classic style, paired with a devil-may-care attitude, has modern, marketable appeal. Men’s luxury brand Ermenegildo Zenga asked Brody to be their 2003 Fall/Winter spokesperson. On the red carpet, you can find this talented actor wearing an expensive Italian suit with tailored details, paired with a half-unbuttoned shirt and a slack necktie. On his more casual days, the actor has been photographed wearing layers of cozy knits over simple white fitted T-shirts paired with distressed denim. Brody never takes his style too seriously. “It’s good to be playful, a bit of a smart ass, it’s fun,” Brody said in an interview with askmen.com. “It would be terribly boring to be earnest.”
