If on a winter's night a shopper

December 13, 2007 | 12:00 a.m. CST

Ah, the holidays. That magical time of year when we open up our wallets to express affection for all the special someones in our lives, when small children sit on strangers’ laps and whisper their innermost desires, when we look forward to the New Year and hope we don’t screw it up like all the others.

For many of us, it is also the time when we wander into a store and realize we have no idea what the heck to buy our loved ones. Confronted with the knowledge friends and family are a mystery, we purchase wildly inappropriate gifts on credit and present them to strained smiles.

But have no fear this year. For our last issue, Vox takes some of the guesswork out of gift giving (“The unconventional gift guide”). We break down the gifts of time, giving, getting and yes, regifting to provide all the solutions you need to survive the holidays in style and avoid those awkward “Gee, thanks for the tube socks” moments.

The holidays are also a time to take a breather, and the crack crew here at Vox will soon be taking a vacation. This will be our last print issue until Jan. 17, but please continue visiting VoxMagazine.com in the meantime for online stories, movie times, restaurant ideas and the must-see events going on in town.

And finally, I offer a gift to you all. When Vox returns in the New Year, a new, better-looking editor will be taking over this column, and you won’t have my mug grinning back at you anymore. You’re welcome.

On behalf of my amazing staff, I’d like to wish you all Happy Holidays.
