New kids on the Vox

January 16, 2008 | 3:27 p.m. CST

When winter storms head toward Columbia, most of my friends hope there’s no snow. Not so for me. After my recent holiday trip to visit the folks back in Orlando, Fla., where New Year’s Eve boasted a toasty 80 degrees, I felt deprived of the season that makes spring and summer so sweet. It seemed strange and somehow wrong to celebrate 2008 with an icy mojito that kept the heat at bay.

Now that I’m back in a place where the seasons make sense, I’m looking forward to one of my favorite cold-weather activities: getting my good friends together to spend an evening in a warm pub and indulging myself with a rich brown ale that manages to warm my body despite its cold temperature. This is just one reason why I’m so excited to have a profile of Flat Branch’s master brewer, Larry Goodwin, in this issue of Vox. Although beer tends to be the standard beverage for kicking back after work or on the weekends, not everyone is aware of the education and skills it takes to brew the perfect pint.

Finding the stories behind life in Columbia is one of my goals as Vox’s winter editor. I also want the magazine to follow the lead of lauded alternative weeklies by providing a mix of content that explores what’s important, reveals what’s new and exposes the unknown. Whether these stories excite or incite, I always want you to walk away from reading Vox feeling something — and eagerly awaiting our next issue. Our team of editors, designers and professors is excited about the work we’ll be doing this semester, and we hope you’ll enjoy reading it as much as we’ll enjoy creating it.
