The Good: All-star collection
Chris Webber of the Golden State Warriors puts his paychecks to good use. In 1994, he began collecting African-American art and artifacts, and his hobby has grown into a collection at the Sacramento Public Library. The artifacts range from a first edition of the first book published by an African-American to a signed postcard from Malcom X. Webber brings pieces with him to schools to inspire young students.
The Bad: The biggest looser
The New Jersey Institute of Technology finished the basketball season with a 0 - 29 record. The Highlanders’ terrible showing has secured the team a spot in the history books with the worst record in NCAA Divison I history. NJIT is also the only Division I team this season with more turnovers than field goals. If NJIT adds one more loss to its 33-game losing streak, which began last February, the team will tie that NCAA record, too.
The Ugly: Plus-sized
Baseball’s Florida Marlins are calling for 10 unfit, flabby men to join the Manatees — an all-male cheerleading squad representative of its chubby marine namesakes. The men are supposed to perform at Friday and Saturday night games. The participants’ only payment is free tickets to those contests. Perhaps the pirouetting porkers will get some fans into the emptiest seats in baseball.
