assault. In 2007, The Shelter, Columbia’s refuge for domestic
violence and sexual assault victims, served 289 residents.
To raise awareness of sexual assault in the community, The Record
Collector, a Missouri band that describes its music as punk-rock and soul,
teams with Daryle Bascom of Videology to raise money for The Shelter. The
April 11 Rhythm & Soul Revue at The Blue Note will use 10-foot screens to
project the statistics regarding both sexual assault and The Shelter’s efforts
to raise awareness and bring peace to Columbia residents.
The Record Collector will play ’60s and ’70s hits before Videology’s
hyper-blend of multimedia. Live cameras and screens will also feature
video footage from the soulful era. All ticket proceeds go to help local
women and children at The Shelter. Brenda Baker, The Shelter’s director of
development, says: “Sexual assault is not OK. Not in our town, not in our
world.”
