Q & A: The Brothers Iyoho

On why you can’t make out to R. Kelly

June 12, 2008 | 12:00 a.m. CST

Vox: Where do your hip-hop names come from?
BC: It was actually given to me in high school. I used to hang out with my friends and kind of bust the raps out. One of my friends, for some reason, started giving me the name Black Caesar. I just rolled with it, and ever since then people have been calling me Black Caesar.
Bus: The first girlfriend I ever really had dissed me, and I wrote this real sad story called “Greyhound Bus Trip.” It’s a fictional tale about a guy going back on a Greyhound bus, back to his hometown after breaking up with his girl. I then kept on saying it (the name) in my freestyle, and I was like, I’ll just call myself Greyhound Bustrip.

Vox: Does living in Texas create collaboration issues?
BC: It can be a challenge, but I guess I’m a real creative person. I’m not trying to brag or anything, but I’m always writing and being creative. We’ve been able to record our albums in one week just because my brother sends me a great beat and I write a song within a day or two.
Vox: What do you guys do when you aren’t composing?
Bus: We’re a bunch of nerds. Me and (my roommate) Omar play Jeopardy at 5 like every day. I won yesterday on the last question.

Vox: What is one of your favorite tracks from the new album?
Bus: “Prayer.” This is probably one of the most powerful songs on the album. This goes directly into we’re praying for people who are struggling and in tough positions. I was very emotional in the studio on this one. I mean we’re both spiritual guys; we believe in God in our own ways.

Vox: Do you have a favorite album?
Bus: The GZA’s Liquid Swords.
BC: I might have to go with Nas, It Was Written.

Vox: Do you have a favorite make out album or song?
Bus: I don’t know the album, but I know it’s Jodeci, and I know it has “Freekin’ You” on it.
BC: I was gonna say R. Kelly, but he kinda has those charges pending, so I’m gonna stay away from that. I might have to go with Musiq Soulchild’s “Teach Me.”

Vox: How well do you guys get along, as brothers and musicians?
BC: I couldn’t have picked a better music soul mate. He inspires me, and I think we are just made for each other in terms of music. I mean I can’t even think of a time when we fought with one another.

Vox: What is the best live show you’ve ever been to?
Bus: KRS — One in Lawrence, Kan.
BC: The Roots when they came to Columbia in 2001.

Vox: Who would be in your dream band?
Bus: I’m gonna veer from hip-hop and say Hendrix on guitar, Flea on the bass to funk it up a little bit. I’d have Ringo on the drums. I need to have DJ Babu on the turntables and ’97 Lauryn Hill as the vocalist. And Stevie Wonder on the keyboards.
BC: I think I agree with my brother entirely on that one.
