5 things we would vote to change in Columbia

October 30, 2008 | 12:00 a.m. CST

In the spirit of voting, we’re all thinking about things we’d like to be different. Everyone’s talking about national issues, so Vox took a look at CoMo and considered what could be improved locally.

1. Greater energy efficiency and more renewable resources

The green movement that’s taken over the nation could manifest itself more in Columbia. Proposition C gives residents the opportunity to make that change.

2. Better recycling downtown

Columbia might be trying to improve recycling in residential areas, but recycling downtown is sorely lacking. Those giant plastic cups from bars and restaurants shouldn’t end up in a landfill.

3. Lower fees for first-offense noise violations

Having a party of at least 10 people can get you more than just a messy apartment. A noise violation (if someone 50 feet away from the property can hear you past 11 p.m.) from a group of 10 or more people could result in at least a $500 fine for your first offense.

4. Left turn signals and left turn lanes

All over town Columbians are left waiting … and waiting … and waiting for their turn to turn. Traffic around town takes long enough, so more turn lanes will help curb the amount of time you spend watching traffic lights change.

5. Later bar-closing time

There’s a large crowd of bar hoppers that isn’t even close to ending its night at 1 a.m., which is when most local bars kick customers out. Columbia city ordinances say alcoholic drinks cannot be served after 1:30 a.m., so an update might keep customers happy and the cash — and drinks — flowing longer into the night.
