Beats Breakfast at Tiffany's

Catherine Szalkowski

I never thought I’d be the bed-and-breakfast type. My idea of a weekend getaway tends to involve housekeeping, slot machines and buffets. I can almost hear the electronic bells calling.
Unfortunately, upon returning from my Nevada-based, money-grubbing adventures, I rarely find myself relaxed. But affordable, piña colada-filled beach fests aren’t easy to come by, however tranquil they might be.
I’ve looked into staying at B&Bs in the past though never followed through with an actual visit. Honestly, the thought of spending the night in a stranger’s home is a bit creepy. No offense. But breakfast is a glorious meal, and anyone willing to serve it up homemade (and with a little love) deserves a shot in my book.
We’ve found 13 such places within driving distance of Columbia (Feature). The delicious food and proximity aren’t the only draws, though. Each lodging is quietly nestled amid culture and entertainment. These B&Bs offer the ability to sneak away, get some rest and enjoy yourself without breaking the bank.
Who knows, somewhere along the drive, while listening to the audiobook you digitally downloaded from the Daniel Boone Regional Library (Books), you might run into the cast of an upcoming film (Screen). George Clooney, anyone?
Now’s the time to get out of town, Columbia, and leave the planning to us. Bon voyage.
