When I was 5 years old growing up in Hawaii, my dad took me to an animal shelter and let me pick out any dog I wanted. Sitting behind one of the chain-link gates, a tail-wagging terrier caught my attention with her pleading puppy-dog eyes that begged me to take her home. It was love at first sight. I named her Sandy, which seemed perfect for a dog whose coat matched the sand so well I often couldn’t spot her on the beach. We had a good 13 years.
I had other pets with creative names. There was Coco, a spunky brown poodle; Sunny, a sun conure with bright yellow feathers; and Lovie, a lovebird of course. (OK, so it turns out I really wasn’t that creative.)
Most of us have owned a pet in our lives, and if you’re a pet person, this is the Vox you’ve been waiting for. We’ve taken the issue and made it all about pets, right down to the last detail. Our relationship with our pets is what makes this issue so special, and Columbia’s affection for animals was evident in the way the community pulled together for the Central Missouri Humane Society. Congratulations to the shelter for winning the $1 million makeover from Zootoo!
No matter your pet of choice, I hope you enjoy this issue dedicated to those family members who can turn a bad day around with their unwavering companionship and their big hearts.
Since my childhood days, I’ve gotten better with pet names. My 4-year-old beagle, Gracie, has been my loyal companion throughout my undergraduate years in Texas and now through graduate school. Her name is inspired by Graceland — and my Elvis obsession. She is a hound dog after all.
