Step out of Columbia and into the Mediterranean world of Casablanca. With authentic Middle Eastern music playing in the background, the small restaurant has a homey feel. Landscape paintings adorn the walls, and simple white paper covers the tables. Casablanca’s prices average about $7 for a variety of dishes such as falafel and gyros. Its most expensive entrees are around $12.
The shish kabob dinner has scrumptious aromas that grace your nose as soon as the dish hits the table. Each skewer spears five succulent pieces of juicy chicken, and you need at least two bites to finish each. Two skewers rest on warm, sweet-tasting rice with a surprisingly spicy kick from what manager and owner Aziz El-Tayash calls “the 10 secret spices.” Casablanca’s dish comes with pita bread cut into quarters and a bowl of tangy, cool tzatziki sauce for dipping. The fresh chicken is lightly seasoned, and when mixed with the bread, rice or sauce (or all three, if you can manage), the flavors of this Mediterranean entree unite into one fiery and savory delight.
