Movie Review: Land of the Lost

June 6, 2009 | 12:00 p.m. CST

Dinosaurs, ice cream, planes, crabs bigger than a man, and the Titanic all have at least one thing in common – they can all be found in a weird, distant desert. Or at least that’s the case in the recently released Land of the Lost, a remake of the classic ’70s TV show.
The film tells the story of a scientist, Dr. Rick Marshall (Will Ferrell), who discovers time-travel through Tachyon technology, the name of a particle that travels faster than light. Problems arise, however, when he and his crew, Holly (Anna Friel) and Will, (Danny McBride), are inadvertently lost in a strange and extraordinary land after being separated from their time-travel device and must find it before it falls into the wrong hands.
Once they are lost, the film is remarkably similar to the first episode of the series (even some of the lines are exactly the same). But thankfully, the film has lost the show’s gender bias. In the series, Holly was Rick’s dumb and ditzy blonde daughter who constantly needed to be corrected by both her brother and dad. In the movie, Holly is brilliant while Rick’s intelligence is interspersed with moments of stupidity and, well, Will’s just a smart-ass. Fans of the show may still like it, but it certainly isn’t homey and nostalgic.
Overall, despite the mostly negative reviews that the film has received, it does have its moment and is a good movie to see if you just want to lose yourself for a little while. If you go into it with an open mind and don’t expect the science to make much sense, you’ll be sure to enjoy it.
