It’s time for the Rocky Horror fanatics to wipe away their makeup and strip off their fishnets. Likewise, The Dude wannabes should hang up their bathrobes and set down their White Russians. It’s time to make room for The Room, a new old movie that’s started to cultivate … well, a cult following.
This is not your average film. It’s actually way, way below average. It’s worse than a Wal-Mart combo-pack of Gigli and Glitter.
“The dialogue, the acting, the film production, everything is bad,” says Whit Loy, Ragtag Cinema’s director of development.
No, it’s not a well-made movie. Yes, the acting is horrible — but it’s awesome.
To name one bad scene from this film would be like trying to find a needle … in a stack of needles. But, one scene in particular caught our eye — when Johnny (Tommy Wiseau) makes a purchase at a flower shop. He quickly rushes to the counter, asks for a dozen roses, puts money on the counter, tells the worker to keep the change, says “Hi doggie” to a dog sitting next to the register and struts out carrying the bouquet upside down. The scene runs on without a pause, much like the preceding sentence. The entire scene is about 24 seconds. Maybe they were short on tape.
“It’s one of those movies that is so painfully bad that it’s painfully funny,”
Loy says.
But The Room’s fame isn’t limited to a few film buffs. In fact, according to a recent article in Entertainment Weekly, even celebs enjoy this movie mockery. Heroes star Kristen Bell hosts watch parties at her house, and Jonah Hill uses a still shot from the film as his MySpace picture. Soon, it might have a following in Columbia as well. Ragtag will debut it in late June and once in July and August.
“It’s definitely a drinking movie,” Loy says. “You get yourself a Stag, come into the theater and laugh.”
