For your eyes only

All the books you’ll “never” read but might be worth the embarrassment

Little Brown Books for Young Readers

Twilight

July 1, 2009 | 12:00 p.m. CST

Twilight Saga
by Stephenie Meyer

Publisher: Little Brown Books for Young Readers
List Price: $83 (Hardcover, boxed set)

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Star Trek: New Frontier

L.A. Candy

Black Hills

The gist: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn follow the story of a human and a vampire who fall in love and yearn to live happily ever after. Although we’ve heard that before, Twilight has sent the reading world into a frenzy. The books have convinced people of all ages that a vampire is actually loveable. Edward Cullen is the perfect, yet nonexistent, boy every girl dreams of. This might have contributed to the saga being 16 percent of all books sold in the U.S. during the first quarter of the year.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
by Ann Brashares

Publisher:
Bantam Doubleday Dell Books for Young Readers
List Price: $13

The gist:
After four best friends learn they will be apart for the summer, they stumble across a pair of jeans that has
an unexplainable magic: they fit all four girls despite their different body shapes and sizes. These magical pants will eventually keep them in contact throughout the summer. While the moral of the story is pleasant, the actuality of a pair of pants fitting four different sizes is far-fetched. At a cost of a corny obsession with pants, readers can learn lessons on friendship by picking up this book.

Star Trek: New Frontier
by Peter David

Publisher:
Idea & Design Works, LLC
List Price: $19.99

The gist: When a dangerous experimental vessel disappears, the crew on board the USS Excalibur must find Starfleet Admiral Edward Jellico to reclaim the prototype ship before he uses it to meddle with the space-time continuum. Adapted from the television series, the Star Trek books can be hard to turn away. Watching and reading about humans successfully living in outer space seems fun, especially after the recent movie’s release. However, the threat of being called a nerd might convince you to hide your feelings toward the books and stick to the TV show.

L.A. Candy
by Lauren Conrad

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers
List price: $17.99

The gist: Any book that has “WTF” written within the first three pages (or for that matter, anywhere else in the book) is doomed. L.A. Candy describes the life of Jane Roberts, a teenager starring in a reality show and trying to keep up with the young Hollywood crowd. Sound familar? Sentences such as “she had to take a shower, like immediately” or a chapter called “Let’s go spend some money” are prominent in the entire work. Not to mention, it is poorly written. You might choose to read this book because Lauren Conrad is intriguing; unfortunately, her book is not.

Black Hills
by Nora Roberts

Publisher: Penguin Group (USA)
List Price: $26.95

The gist:
Although Black Hills won’t be in stores until July 7, don’t feel too embarrassed to pre-order it if romance novels are your guilty pleasure. Branded with the phrase “and even cougars aren’t safe,” the book follows two characters as they rekindle their love while trying to escape a dangerous killer. Publisher’s Weekly describes Black Hills as a “gushy love-conquers-all story,” which may be enough to either encourage or stifle your cravings to read it. You might have a right to be sheepish about the book as it narrowly escaped reviews with a three-star rating, so keep it tucked away from view.
