Lin uses a feminist approach to address the plight of immigrants in her pastel drawings and acrylic paintings

Suqin “Jackie” Lin, a second-year graduate student from China, uses a feminist approach to address the plight of immigrants in her pastel drawings and acrylic paintings

November 5, 2009 | 12:00 a.m. CST

Through oil paintings and pastels, Lin expresses the struggles and obstacles sometimes present in cross-cultural relationships. Her work touches on domestic violence, abuse and cultural differences in parenting styles. The immigrants in Lin’s work not only represent women whose weak English makes it difficult to seek help, but also those who refuse help for fear of losing their green cards. Lin, a student from China, says stories that focus on the exploitation of mail-order bride programs also inspire her to make others aware of the struggles many women face. “I feel so sad about that, so I wanted to say something about it,” Lin says.
