This is news

When I heard about this week’s incident at MU’s Black Culture Center, especially after reading about the noose and, later, the KKK-style hood found at the University of San Diego, one of my first thoughts was This could make national news. As a journalist, I see the inner workings of how quickly news spreads, and as a Mizzou grad, it sickened me that the repulsive actions of a few could taint our nation’s image of this university. Yet, this is news. It happened.
We might see ourselves as progressive, Columbia, but racism, homophobia, sexism and more still pervade our community. We are not as enlightened as we think. This brings me to the feature story that doesn’t grace this week’s cover: human trafficking in Missouri. Read about the individuals, many women and children, who are being abused sexually and physically, then trafficked as property, not people. It’s happening in our state, and even in our town. So with this issue of Vox, I ask that we evaluate ourselves. Black History Month just ended, and March is Women’s History Month. These months are meant to raise awareness, but how far have we really come?
