A look at some of Columbia’s photographers and the unique services they offer

May 13, 2010 | 12:00 a.m. CST

Spring and summer are popular seasons for making memories, and whether you’re graduating high school or getting married, documenting occasions with photography is essential. Many photographers offer standard wedding and portrait photography, but some have a more eclectic list of services ranging from pets to delivery day photography. Here’s Vox’s rundown on some local specialties.

Baby geniuses

Art & Soul Photography Inc.

When Lana Eklund first began studying photography, she noticed that important milestones such as graduating high school and getting married were typically captured, but pregnancy and childbirth were skipped. After shooting maternity and delivery day photography for a friend seven years ago, she began offering the service as part of her business. “I come in right as the dad is cutting the cord and capture some of the baby’s first moments of life,” she says. “I get chills every time because it is such an amazing time.”

Pawprints

Casey R Corbin Photography

Casey Corbin got his start in photography during a solo trip to Yellowstone more than 20 years ago. While on that road trip, Corbin snapped more than 90 rolls of film and found a new hobby in nature and wildlife photography. Since then, he has expanded his repertoire to include wedding and portrait photography, as well as the pet portraiture he does both in-studio and on location. This hobby stems from his love of his own two Alaskan sled dogs. “You can ask anyone: My dogs are like my kids,” he says. “They go everywhere with me.”

Earth-saving snapshots

CMR Photographer

When it comes to her photography business, Catherine Marie Rhodes ties together her interests in pictures and being green. Rhodes specializes in weddings and offers a unique alternative to leather-bound wedding albums with her eco-friendly collections. Clients can receive their photos in an album made with organic paper, eco-friendly ink and all-natural twine binding and dipped in beeswax for protection. Rhodes began offering the green albums in April for a $150 upgrade on her wedding package. “I love eco-friendly things,” she says. “I think it’s good to cater to those clients who also like that.”

Penny-pinching portraits

DSW Photography

When Dan Watt and his wife, Summer, got married four years ago, they had a tight budget for a photographer. Their struggle to find a lower-priced package, paired with their mutual hobby of photography, inspired them to start a business that accommodated other couples with the same needs. After trying their hands at wedding photography as favors for friends, they opened a business on the side of their day jobs as a software developer and nurse. Instead of using prints, the Watts give clients a copyright-released CD because it saves both parties time and money. “It makes our lives easy, it makes their lives easy, and if they want to print it at Walmart, they can do that,” Dan says.

Nature’s best

Photography by Angelique

Angelique Hunter specializes in children’s photography with an outdoorsy twist. After moving to Columbia from California two years ago, the beauty of the nature and seasons in the Midwest captivated her. Hunter doesn’t use artificial lighting for shoots and instead likes to photograph sessions either out in nature or near windows if the shoot is inside. She does this with photos of newborns especially. “I use natural indoor lighting because it looks softer on the baby’s skin,” she says. Her favorite locale for outdoor photography? Rock Bridge Memorial State Park.

Custom candids

Richard Berry Photography

Richard Berry says he loves to capture people in their natural environment. His photography is designed to be portable because he believes portraits are best when shot in the environment that makes people who they are. “You go to Walmart, and they have all these lights and equipment, and the kids get cranky because it’s not a place they know or like,” Berry says. “That point of being just a little more comfortable is being conveyed in the photo.” He says one of the best shoots he has done was of children in their grandmother’s back yard.
