Fourth of July

Klinton Silvey

July 1, 2010 | 12:00 a.m. CST

My favorite holiday is upon us, and Vox has produced a fairly American issue in honor of the Fourth of July.

We can tell you where to get apple pie and fireworks, and we discuss some local effects of a national disaster. But patriotism is represented best by our feature this week.

Fighting for change has been part of the American way since the revolutionary war, and the examples set by our featured citizens are worth following.

As Americans, we have the rights to assemble, petition, protest, vote and voice our opinions on government issues.

Unfortunately, we also have the right to sit on our butts and do nothing — a right that is exercised far too often and usually results in an ironic flurry of complaints from the couch potatoes when their particular ideals are not met.

I hope this Fourth sparks a little patriotism in us all. Let freedom — and your voice — ring.
