Dogs with Blogs digs into CoMo

Man's best friend gets a say on the Internet

July 15, 2010 | 12:00 a.m. CST

Whether they’re chasing squirrels, licking their butts or sitting under the chair at the dinner table begging for scraps, dogs seem to be simple creatures with basic needs. However, bloggers around the world are delving into the minds of their mutts and using their human abilities to type on the computer with those handy opposable thumbs to voice the words dogs can’t exactly speak — besides barking and growling, of course.

Meet Fuller's Dog Pack

Misha Meep
The alpha of the pack, Misha is a bit of a medical practitioner, as he’s always trying to heal the others from scrapes and toothaches.

Turbo
Turbo might not be the leader of the pack, but he is Fuller’s main blogger. Turbo has done it all. He even interviewed his own human and campaigned for president of the United States in 2008.

Aurora “Roo Roo” Borealis
Aurora is the only female in the pack but stands up for herself. Her blog is much more lighthearted than the other dogs, and she’s quite flirty.

Fargo North Dogkota
Fargo is a practical joker but is one of the more “behaved” dogs and claims to have won the “Canine Good Citizen” certificate.

Lex
Lex doesn’t get along with many of the other dogs but is lovably uncoordinated when he gets excited. His nickname is the “Amazing Houdini Dog.”

Dogs with Blogs is a blogging community for dog lovers who want to give their pets a voice. Owners sit down at the computer and bark out thoughts and feelings they think their dogs might have. Many posts correspond to what their dog did that day, whether it was frolicking in a field or snagging a burrito off the table.

Local blogger Jena Fuller has three Siberian huskies and two husky mixes. A member of Dogs with Blogs, Fuller channels the personalities of each dog — Turbo, Misha Meep, Lex, Fargo North Dogkota and Aurora “Roo Roo” Borealis — into individual blogs. Each dog has his or her own personality and a unique writing style.

After seeing other husky blogs, Fuller thought it would be amusing to blog from a dog’s perspective. She started blogging for her dogs in February 2006.

“I think the reason I formed the dogs’ different blogs is so they could go in and make comments on each other’s blogs and refer to things on other blogs,” Fuller says. “I just try to keep the tone of what I think their personalities are.”

In June 2006, Fuller took the interaction between blogs a step further and created a blog for her Dyson vacuum cleaner so that Turbo could express his hatred of the vacuum in the comments section. She says he complains that the machine is “stupid.”

The trend of dog blogging became popular more than five years ago when Australian dog owner, Web developer and photographer Greg Lee launched the site.

“It gives their dog a voice that everybody wishes their dog had,” Lee says. “We want to be able to talk to our dogs and want to know what they’re thinking. Blogging gives people that sort of feeling.”

The community of dog bloggers has grown to around 1,500 blogs since it started. Lee received a great outreach of support from the online community after Charlie, his dog of 15 years and the reason he started the website, died in August 2009.

“You get so attached to them; it’s just unconditional love,” Lee says. “It’s easy to fall in love with a dog that can take out your heart.”

An MU graduate with a degree in English, Fuller mainly sees blogging as a way to express herself creatively. “Creative writing has always been something that I’ve done as the real world happened, and I had to work for a living, and I couldn’t sit around writing all the time,” Fuller says. “The blog is an outlet for that.”

Fuller’s dog Turbo declined to be interviewed. He would, however, like to say, “Cheese and bacon for all.”
