A Quidditch glossary

Terms you need to know to play the game

So you’ve never played Quidditch, which is understandable, but would like to start. Before you go rushing off to find a suitable broom, here is a list of terms from the magical Quidditch game you should know.

Equipment

Bludger: A small cannonball-like object that flies through the air
Golden Snitch: A golf ballsized golden ball that flies like a hummingbird to avoid capture. You covet the snitch.
Quaffle: The ball Chasers throw through the hoops

Players

Beater: A player responsible for protecting his or her team and attacking the other team with Bludgers. In nonmagic Quidditch, these people throw dodgeballs at opposing teams.
Chaser: A player who throws the Quaffle through one of three hoops
Golden Snitch: In nonmagic Quidditch, the Golden Snitch is a tennis ball stuffed inside a tube sock attached to the Snitch runner who must evade both teams’ Seekers.
Keeper: The protector of his or her team’s hoops
Seeker: A player responsible for capturing the Snitch

Penalties

Cobbing: A foul for use of elbows
Flacking: A Keeper violation for putting a body part through the hoop to prevent a goal
Haversacking: A Chaser foul for not releasing the ball from his or her hand when putting it through the hoop
Snitchnipping: A violation that occurs when a player other than the Seeker touches the Snitch
