Women's health services face federal funding cuts

March 10, 2011 | 12:00 a.m. CST

Where do babies come from? Change the word “babies” to “funding,” and that’s a question that might soon be difficult to answer for Planned Parenthood and 102 affiliated organizations across the nation because of new legislation.

The Pence Amendment in House Bill H.R.1 passed in the House of Representatives on Feb. 18, and as of March 2, it has two weeks to be voted on in the Senate. The bill looks to cut funding for women’s health services such as STD testing and abortions.

Currently receiving $363 million in federal funding per year, Planned Parenthood would no longer be able to provide services to half of its 1.4 million patients. Here’s a comparison of the current rates for a few women’s health services in Columbia.
