Since Ward's last solo work in 2009, he’s been busy with successful side projects, such as She & Him and Monsters of Folk. The release of A Wasteland Companion ends Ward’s short-lived solo hiatus. The album’s opening track, “Clean State,” grabs your attention with earthy guitar tones and Ward’s sultry voice. Ward’s use of minor keys and haunting lyrics casts shadows throughout the album’s 12 songs.
