When: June 4-Aug 30, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cost: Free
Call: 882-3555

MU Professor Emeritus Robert Bussabarger’s collection of art from India has been sitting in a storage facility since it was donated to the university in the early 2000s. Now, through a partnership with MU’s department of anthropology, the George Caleb Bingham Gallery will host the exhibit, “An artist travels to India: Selections from the collection and works of Robert Bussabarger.”

Bussabarger, who retired from MU in 1990, taught ceramics and painting for more than 30 years at MU and was chairman of the art department from 1970-1973. His interest reached beyond the state’s borders, and in 1961, he received the Fulbright Research Scholarship, which funded his first trip to India. He was able to secure funding for subsequent trips and spent two years on leave to India, and has made multiple trips to India over the past 30 years. One of the products of his research has been the book he co-authored with Betty Dashew Robins, The Everyday Arts of India.

“During those trips, he bought a lot of artwork that was beautifully crafted using local materials,” gallery director Hannah Reeves says. “We have selected a portion of his collection for this exhibit.”

Items that will be on display include textiles, small wooden and metal items, ceramic sculptures and paintings.
“For me in the big picture of the exhibit, the important thing that connects these items besides that they are all from India is that he selected all these items,” Reeves says. “It is his personal narrative.”

Bussabarger helped the museum archive the collection and map where the objects came from in India.
While he was in India, Bussabarger spent time working with a ceramist and producing work while he was there, which will be featured in the exhibit.

“I think it’s going to be very interesting insight into his own mind because we’re going to have some examples of his work and be able to see the influence of this culture in his own work,” says Josephine Stealey, an MU art professor and head of the fiber program.

Bussabarger’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibits throughout the United States and India.
Stealey says she thinks anyone who comes to the exhibit will become more knowledgable about the role these objects play in the everyday lives of Indians.

The show opens June 4 and will run through Aug. 30. There will be a reception on the last day to honor the artist.
