Three-time Grammy Award winner and alternative country maven Lucinda Williams illuminates tales of Americana with her honest, revealing lyrics and her unmistakable rasp. Her whiskey-infused alto voice reveals a distinct dichotomy between strength and vulnerability that has forged a strong connection between the singer-songwriter and music fans. Although she’s had her share of heartaches and hardships, her latest album, 2011’s Blessed, showcases a calmer, more comfortable and dare we say happier Williams.
Named America’s best songwriter by Time magazine in 2001, Williams will bring her mix of country, rock, blues and folk to Stephens Lake Park on July 24. For years, Thumper Entertainment has been looking to bring bigger events to the venue. Organizer Jessica Brown says, “They really wanted to shine a spotlight on it.” Organizers set out to create the right vibe for a show, a performance that could encompass the feel of the park. “In our minds, we pictured bringing the family out, laying down a blanket, drinking a beer, eating some good food and just relaxing for an evening,” Brown says. Williams’ sound and style perfectly fit the bill. Organizers hope that this show will be the kick-off to future large-scale events and festivals in the park.
Food and drink — alcoholic and otherwise — vendors will be onsite, and guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs. Fans can park at the Boone Hospital Medical Plaza or in the Fifth Street parking garage, where a shuttle will be available starting at 5:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $28 and VIP tickets, which include close-range seating, light snacks and a VIP cash bar, are $48.
