Skip the morning coffee because Café Berlin’s Apples & Sausage will wake you up with a spicy kick of chili powder.
Sausage, maple syrup and apples are all breakfast favorites yet rarely share the same skillet. But with the aid of a few pinches of cinnamon, chili powder, garlic, brown sugar and slices of red onion, these ingredients create the ideal zing of spice and syrupy sweetness. It’s a dish you won’t find anywhere else in Columbia, owner Eli Gay says.

Like all of Café Berlin’s meat, the andouille sausage is produced locally. It comes from Patchwork Family Farms, whose office is on Rangeline Street.
Apples & Sausage first appeared on the menu in 2007 after a cook mentioned he liked the combination of ingredients. It’s popular for customers who want to order something original with their bottomless cup of coffee.
“It’s an adventurous order for people,” manager Allison Starn says. Some customers prefer to stick with staples such as eggs and pancakes, but Café Berlin dares you to step outside your culinary comfort zone.
Brunch traditionalists can still have their pancake and eat it, too. For just a dollar, you can add one under all the other ingredients. Two dollars will get you a slice of French Toast, and on Saturdays and Sundays, you can order a waffle instead.
The buttermilk pancake covers the plate and creates a canvas for the salty andouille sausage. Maple syrup infused with brown sugar drenches the still-crunchy onions and sweet, organic apples, which are studded with specks of cinnamon and chili.
The spongy pancake is the perfect finish to the culinary experience because it absorbs all the flavors and lets you relive the dish with each bite.
Ideal for those who can’t decide between a sweet breakfast and a savory lunch, Apples & Sausage is the definition of brunch.
