I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions. It’s my philosophy that if there’s something you can’t do during the year, chances are, you’ll never do it. But one tradition I have as the year ends is to reflect on how things have changed. I always find myself going through the pictures on my phone from the past year as I put them in an archive on my desktop, and I notice that a lot has changed: I now have a dog, much shorter hair and a new car.
With this week’s feature, we’ve gone through photos taken by Vox and Missourian staff photographers this past year to showcase some prominent moments as well as stunning visuals and the stories behind the powerful images.
When you stop and think about all that has happened in 2017, it can be a bit overwhelming. But there were some lovely moments and worthy heroes amid the ever-churning news cycle. For instance, during the eclipse, people came to Columbia from all over the country to watch the once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon, and Missouri’s Task Force One trekked all the way to Texas to help with relief efforts after Hurricane Harvey.
These were welcome moments of light in a year with some darkness. We’ll see you in 2018.
